The Academy of Continuing Legal Education presents a program June 2, 2017, Friday. This 6.5 hour program will provide information on Local Government Management of Surface Water, Public and Private Partnerships for Watershed Protection, and Biological and Land Use approaches to water management for 4.0 hours of environmental law, This program will also include 2.5 hours of Professional Conduct CLE. This program has been approved by the Supreme Court of Ohio, Office of CLE, for 4.0 hours of general CLE and 2.5 hours of Professional Conduct credit. For those licensed in other professions, a Certificate of Attendance is available which an attendee may use to apply to other licensing agencies. A portion of this program is co-sponsored by the College of Architecture and Environmental Design of Kent State University, which has applied for American Institute of Architects CEU and possibly American Society of Landscape Archtiects CEU,

The June 2 program includes:

Land Trusts, Conservation Easements, and Other Tools for Preserving Valued Habitat, discussing successful programs in which Ohio non-governmental organizations have co-ordinated with government agencies in protecting the land and water in Ohio watersheds. This material will be presented by Timothy G. Mara, Esq., who has been counsel to Oxbow, Inc., since 1994, preserving the flood plain of the Great Miami River, and has been counsel to the Western Wildlife Corridor which protects habitat along the Ohio River from downtown Cincinnati to Indiana.

Local Government Management of Surface Water, presented by Matt Scharver, Watershed Manager of the North East Ohio Regional Sewer District. NEORSD has implemented programs to address flooding, erosion, and water-qualtiy issues in the several watersheds that flow into Lake Erie, with land-use management and stormwater management, in co-operation with other local government authorities. Mr Scharver will discuss the financial tools and regulatory techniques that have been successful in improving water quality throughout the ecosystem.

Restoration Through Vegetation, presented by Christina Znidarsic, Senior Watershed Manager of Chagrin River Watershed Partners, Inc. CRWP is a collaboration of local governments, including three Park Districts, thirty city, village, and township governments, and the County of Lake. CRWP advises its member communities on land use and zoning issues, and provides public education on strategies to protect and enhance the quality of the land and water. This presentation will discuss biological approaches to watershed protection, through community guidelines for designed replanting of native species of trees and ground cover. This one-hour portion of the program is co-sponsored by the College of Architecture and will be presented at the Cene Lecture Hall at the College, at 7:10 PM.

The mandatory "Professional Conduct" two-and-one-half hour requirement is presented, in two morning sections of 60 minutes and 90 minutes, by Linette M. Stratford, Esq., Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney of the Mahoning County Prosecuting Attorney. Ms. Stratford is an adjunct member of the faculty of Youngstown State University, where she teaches classes in Ethics for business students. Ms. Stratford's first, 60-minute, session will discuss "Ethical Considerations for Attorneys Representing County, Township, and Local Government Agencies." The second, 90-minute session, will discuss "Disciplinary Issues for Attorneys Who Hold Public Office".

Price for the six and one-half hours of CLE is $215.00, being $33.08 per credit hour, for registrations paid by May 21, 2017. Late registrations, received on or after May 22, are $240.00, to cover the expense of reproducing additional sets of the course materials at an expedited cost.

A discounted fee, for Early Registration ONLY, is available for attorneys and water-quality professionals representing small-county and small-city or village governments, described online here.

The Registration fee includes electronic reporting of CLE attendance to the Supreme Court of Ohio, Commission on Continuing Legal Education. A certificate of Attendance will be provided without additional charge, if an attendee requests, to enable that attendee to individually apply for credit for attending this program with any other State or agency, If an attendee requests that the Academy communicate with another agency, there is an administrative charge of $50.00 per other State or agency for which communications or documents are requested.
