The Academy of Continuing Legal Education presents a program January 14, 2017, Saturday morning. This program will provide information on the statutory requirements of Ohio election law, as relate to candidates for public office and political party organization, and an update on Federal and Ohio court decisions affecting those aspects of Ohio election law, amendments to Revised Code Title 35 and the most current Secretary of State Directives and Advisories. This program has been approved by the Supreme Court of Ohio, Office of CLE, for 3.0 hours of CLE credit. This program has also been applied to the Secretary of State of Ohio for 1.0 hour credit for attendance at the 3 hour program, for Board of Elections member and director Additional Instruction required by Secretary of State Directive 2010-103.

The January 14 program includes:

Ohio Election Statutes, Directives, and Advisories Affecting Candidates for Public Office, discussing requirements for declarations of candidacy; petitions; campaign finance reporting requirements; and advertising disclosure requirements. This material will be presented by Brian Shinn, Esq., formerly General Counsel and Chief Election Counsel to former Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner.

Ohio Election Statutes Affecting Political Party Organization, Structure, and Governance discussing Revised Code Chapter 3517 requirements for State organization of a major political party, the selection of members of a State Central Committee, County organization of a major political party, and selection of members of a County central committee. Some discussion will be had of the requirements of a National party for a State party organization, in addition to Ohio statutory requirements. This is presented by Christopher J. Mallin, Esq. Mr. Mallin is presently a member of the Democratic Party Central Committee of Portage County, was a member of the Credentials Committee of the 2016 Democratic National Convention, and has in the past been a member of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Central Committee and Executive Committee, a delegate to several Ohio Democratic Party State Conventions from Portage County and from Cuyahoga County, and has been a delegate to an earlier Democratic National Connvention.

Price for the three hours of CLE is $95.00, being $31.67 per credit hour, for registrations paid by January 4, 2017. Late registrations, received on or after January 4, are $110.00, to cover the expense of reproducing additional sets of the course materials at an expedited cost.

A discounted fee, for Early Registration ONLY, is available for individual registrants who will be candidates for election in 2017, who are not attorneys or election officials.

The Registration fee includes electronic reporting of CLE attendance to the Supreme Court of Ohio, Commission on Continuing Legal Education. Pending approval of this program by the Secretary of State, the Registration fee also includes electronic reporting of attendance to the Secretary of State for Board of Elections credit, if requested by the attendee. If an attendee requests additional communications or documents to enable that attendee to apply for credit for attending this program with any other State or agency, there is an administrative charge of $50.00 per other State or agency for which communications or documents are requested.
